According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 26 percent of all Americans aged 16 or older have been injured in a car accident at some point in their lives and needed medical treatment as a result. More than half of those who are hurt require additional, follow up treatment and some will suffer from their injuries for the remainder of their lives.
While almost any activity can lead to an injury, car accidents pose a particular threat because the actions of other drivers affect everyone’s safety. Therefore, cautious and defensive drivers can still be hurt in a collision if another motorist acts in a negligent or reckless manner. When a crash strikes, those who suffer may bear no fault for the cause of the collision yet may be forced to endure pain and suffering in addition to serious injuries. Medical expenses can quickly put victims in debt and can affect their abilities to provide for their families and themselves. Following an incident, those who have been hurt may be shocked to learn that the efforts of police and state’s attorneys to punish at-fault drivers do not benefit the victims directly; rather, if an injured accident victim wants relief, it is up to that victim to seek and obtain it alone or with the help of a personal injury lawyer.
Around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, two vehicles collided near Interstate 17 and New River in Phoenix and caused devastation to those involved. Three people were left with life-threatening injuries and at least another two people were hurt in the collision. Police have not yet revealed a suspected cause of the crash but they have confirmed that their review is ongoing at this time.
The three victims facing life threatening injuries were transported by helicopter for emergency treatment at an area hospital while the remaining two victims were taken by ambulance. Southbound I-17 was closed while the injured were evacuated and while emergency crews removed the debris from the crash.
