Ex-NFL Star Donovan McNabb Arrested for DUI in Gilbert

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, approximately one-third of all drivers who are arrested for or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders. This may seem logical when you consider the fact that MADD also reports an average drunk driver operates under the influence more than 80 times before he or she is arrested and charged for an infraction. While it remains a crime in Arizona to drive while drunk, countless motorists do so every day and they place the safety of others in jeopardy as a result of their actions.

Arizona, including Maricopa County, has some of the strictest drunk driving laws in the nation and many first time offenders are required to serve jail time as a result. That is a lesson that former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb learned after a 2013 arrest for drunk driving outside of Phoenix and a subsequent guilty plea. Now, McNabb is facing similar charges after a traffic accident at a red light in Gilbert.

Police have confirmed that they were called to the scene of an accident near Chandler Heights and Higley Roads on June 28, 2015. When they arrived, they determined that McNabb struck the rear of a vehicle in front of him when the other vehicle was stopped at a red light. Upon investigation, the arresting officer was able to determine that McNabb was under the influence of alcohol and McNabb was taken into custody. After he was charged, he was released.

McNabb splits his time between a home in Chandler and one in New Jersey, therefore leading to his knowledge of the Valley and his multiple traffic issues here. He gained fame as the second overall draft pick in the 1999 NFL draft before spending 11 seasons as a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles followed by a season each with the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings. McNabb started work as an on-air personality with the NFL Network in 2012 and also on Fox Sports 1 beginning in 2013.

McNabb has addressed the arrest in vague terms on a radio show he hosts but has not released any additional information or indicated how he will plea in this matter.

Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident involving McNabb but that is not always the case. Far too often, drunk driving accidents in the Phoenix area lead to injuries and even fatalities among those involved, forever altering the lives of victims and their family members.
